Laundry Room Remodel Ideas: Best Flooring for Your Laundry Room

The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the average person spends 17 minutes each day doing laundry of some sort. So, why not make these spaces more attractive like the rest of our home?

That being said, laundry rooms must also withstand everyday use. From a place to hang-dry dripping clothes to being the go-to cleaning closet, our laundry rooms take on a lot. And that’s why we believe the flooring is just as crucial as the washer and dryer. So if you are looking for laundry room remodel ideas, here are the best flooring options for your laundry room. Plus, we offer some creative ways to transform it into a more inviting space.

Vinyl Plank and Tile

Probably the best flooring for your laundry room, vinyl plank and tile offers many waterproof options. Plus, many homeowners simply love this flooring because it comes in various styles, mimicking authentic exotic hardwood to high-end stones and porcelain tiles. And for the realistic look, they are more affordable and simpler to clean than other flooring types.

Constructed of a rigid solid core,  waterproof LVP and LVT are quite durable, able to withstand scuffs, stains and dents. However, it’s vital to ensure this flooring is installed on a solid substrate without irregularities or unevenness. Even though it can be installed over existing floors, the base layer needs to be inspected. While this flooring is regarded as an easy DIY project, we highly advise using a professional flooring installer. They can help you determine things like which direction to install vinyl flooring in your laundry room, which is key to preventing moisture damage or other issues.

Vinyl Sheet

For a fast laundry room renovation, vinyl sheet flooring may be the perfect option. Made in 12-foot-wide rolls, sheet vinyl avoids creating any seams in the laundry room altogether, minimizing trapped moisture. Plus, when you combine it with a baseboard of rubber or use a sealer, it’s even more splash-zone-proof.

Vinyl sheet has also come a long way from looking like your grandmother’s kitchen. Today, you can find vinyl sheet flooring in numerous styles that resemble anything from rustic wood planks to luxury stone tiles. Plus, vinyl sheet flooring is exceptionally affordable. The biggest disadvantage of vinyl? Should it ever become severely damaged, you’ll have to replace the entire room/sheet at once.

Laminate Flooring

For homeowners on a budget, laminate flooring is undoubtedly one of the more affordable flooring options. Like vinyl plank and tile flooring, it’s also relatively easy to clean and holds up to scratches and dents. The top printed wear layer resembles natural wood and its construction prevents fading from the sun.

The largest disadvantage to laminate flooring in the laundry room is that the particle board base can be damaged if the washer overflows. However, you can prevent this by installing a pan under the washer and sealing and gluing the laminate flooring plank’s tongues with PVA (polyvinyl acetate glue) to act as a moisture barrier. One of the biggest gripes of laminate is that it can sound a bit hollow, amplified with a loud appliance. If your laundry room is close to bedrooms or living rooms where you watch TV, you might want to consider another flooring option.

Engineered Wood

Solid hardwood floors, which are prone to buckling and cupping, are much more susceptible to moisture. So unless your laundry room is adjacent and connected to the kitchen or another larger space where you prefer solid hardwood, it’s best to choose engineered wood flooring instead. When it comes to engineered vs. solid hardwood flooring, there are many defining differences.

While engineered hardwood floors are not as affordable as laminate or vinyl sheet, they are significantly more stable than solid hardwood–if that’s the look you desire. Built of a high-quality plywood base, they can resist humidity and withstand moisture-prone areas, making them perfect for laundry rooms. The only drawback to engineered hardwood is that the top veneer surface can delaminate if your laundry room floods. There’s also the chance of it being damaged by laundry chemicals and spilled cleaners.   One alternative is to select waterproof hardwood floors such as Raintree, which is a hybrid between hardwood and rigid core flooring.

Extra Laundry Room Remodel Ideas

Once you choose your laundry room flooring, consider these additional laundry room remodel ideas. Laundry rooms don’t have to be so drab. Instead, transform the space. For once, you might even look forward to your chores!

Add a Pop of Color–Incorporate a pop of color or visual interest to your laundry room flooring, using a different shade of the same flooring brand or even through a bright red washer and dryer or navy cabinets. You can also mix and match materials, adding a band of river rock or mosaic tiles as a border edge.

Turn It Into a Multipurpose Space–Make your laundry room a multipurpose space, adding things like a dog-washing station or a hidden area for the cat’s litter box. If your laundry room is adjacent to the garage or entryway, it can also double as a mudroom, storing shoes, wet coats and more.

Conceal or Dress It Up–Hide your laundry room station behind sliding barn doors, lending a modern farmhouse style to the home. Or, if you prefer to showcase your laundry room off the side of the kitchen or make it more inviting for chore work, give it a vintage or industrial style, complete with decorative signage and wire baskets.
