Home / Seasonal Style / How to Use Blue in Your Home Design

When it comes to your home decor, blues are anything but dreary. The color of the sky and sea, blue is a soothing and calming color to include in your home.  Blue represents freedom, open space, creativity, imagination, trust, loyalty, and sincerity.  All good things. From sunny robin's egg blue to deep midnight blue, take confidence there is a blue hue perfectly suited for your style.

Classic Combinations

One of our absolute favorite color combinations for any space, inside or out, is blue and white.  Simple, crisp, timeless, and inviting, this combination is both incredibly relaxed and gorgeously chic at the same time.  It is impossible to be everything to everyone, but blue and white just might be the exception.

Create a fresh look with white slipcovered furniture accented with rich navy throw pillows and a fantastic blue area rug.  This combination can become a coastal retreat by incorporating natural elements like seagrass, shells, and sea oats.  Or, it can lean towards traditional design by accentuating with gold fixtures and blue and white porcelain.  For a completely different look all together, blue and white can be exotic and vivid.  Think Santorini in the Greek Islands.

Another classic combination is blue and gray.  It can be masculine with navy and flannel and a great leather club chair, or it can be soft and inviting such as cadet blue and a dovetail gray sink-in-and-just-melt plush sectional sofa.

Bold Accents

If bold and vivid are more your style, add orange, yellow, or bright pink to your blue room to excite and invigorate your space. Want to go a little bolder? Why not indigo floors?  We are enamored with this stunning new luxury vinyl flooring from Metroflor's Déjà New collection.  What a great color to liven up a kids playroom, basement, powder room, laundry room or large pantry.

Color of the Year

Without fail, shades of blue always make the Color and Trends of the Year from all the experts in color.  We are especially drawn to Behr's Blueprint S470-5 , which would make a fantastic accent wall in a room.

Benjamin Moore's Hale Navy HC-154 is a true, noble navy.  It is a gorgeous addition to the brand's Color Trends 2019 palette.  (Tip:  the swatch photo doesn't do this color justice - we highly recommend you view it in a room )

Pantone offers Mallard Blue and a rich Deep Teal (some say its blue, others say its green, we say its blue-green) in its 2019 Classico palette.  Set against a neutral backdrop, a teal textile or sette can make a dramatic statement without overstaying its welcome in a room.

Best Floors For a Blue Room

Blue is a modern neutral that pairs with a wide range of floor stain colors.  From natural wood to rich chocolate and weathered gray to sleek gunmetal, blue is the perfect complement to any floor fashion.

Whether you choose to cover a room in a striking blue print wallpaper or highlight with touches of blue throughout a room, this versatile color provides endless inspiration.
