The new year is the best time to create a fresh new look in your home. After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, what better "new look" to incorporate into your surroundings than a sense of calm? Soft whites, relaxing creams, and whispers of gray all speak to a season of renewal.
Neutral colors are often inspired by natural elements and fabrics such as linen, seagrass, raw cotton, and silk. From paints and textiles to hard surfaces and floors, designing with light colors creates an open and airy feeling throughout the room or home.
A soothing neutral color scheme does not limit you to one type of design. It is timeless, fluid, and elegantly sophisticated. We have seen gorgeous neutral palettes make a striking impact in contemporary homes in the city, modern farmhouses in the country, and charming cottages at the coast. There is no other palette that transcends style barriers quite like neutrals.
Soft Color Palettes
From the walls to the floor, soothing new neutrals are quickly defining 2019. One of our favorite paint brands, Benjamin Moore, named Metropolitan AF-690 as their 2019 Color of the Year (pictured). A gorgeous neutral and understated hue, Metropolitan is a gray with cool undertones that exudes glamour, beauty, and balance.
Benjamin Moore's Color Trends 2019 offers a corresponding palette of 15 colors ranging from neutrals to pinks to rich blues and greens. Have a look at this soothing palette here.
Why We Love White & Neutral Floors
Whether whitewashed or stained, white hardwood floors are both incredibly relaxed and beautifully elegant at the same time. They can take center stage in a room, be the perfect backdrop for a vivid area rug, or unify a room filled with eclectic furniture.
They have the power to transform a room unlike any other floor. They can make a small room seem bigger and create light in a dark space. Some of our favorite whites, ivories, and neutral floors can be found in Palmetto Road, Veranda, and Hearthwood hardwood collections.

If you are looking for a neutral flooring that isn't hardwood, we love Beauflor's Lime Oak from the Pure collection featured on right. This hard surface flooring is waterproof, durable, and easy to maintain. It would make for a gorgeous bathroom floor!
While white floors are definitely among the "new neutrals" of flooring, they can be a dramatic choice. Natural flooring (unstained) has been the king of the neutrals since the beginning of time. Ivory floors or a blend of grays and taupes deliver a textured neutral to your space.
A neutral palette on the walls, floor, and in your furniture selection can be highlighted with muted gold, copper, or matte nickel fixtures. Plants, especially those with variegated leaves, and other greenery can enhance the natural look of neutrals. If you ever feel like you need a pop, it is easy to incorporate artwork, vases, or throw pillows in rich colors to give your room a surprise element.
