Home / Trends & Styles / The Ultimate Checklist: Spring Cleaning Room-by-Room

As winter fades into a fresh spring, we often feel a sense of renewal, which results in the determination to freshen up our homes as well. But where do we begin with this enormous task?

Twenty & Oak has offered the ultimate checklist for spring cleaning room-by-room. Here are some thoughtful tips and advice on what to focus on, especially noting specific floor care for your flooring type.

Prepare to Clean

Before you go room-by-room with the following list, there are a few ways you can prepare for the real grunt work.

Declutter–Clear away the clutter, picking up items off the floor or spread across tables and putting them away in their respective spots.

Take Inventory–Check your cleaning supplies and make sure you have everything you need. Some cleaning tools might include a mop and vacuum cleaner with extensions, as well as dusting cloths, sponges and a telescoping pole for hard-to-reach ceiling fans and corners.

Some cleaning sprays could also be multi-purpose cleaners, glass cleaners and wood polish. You could even opt for natural ingredients such as baking soda, lemon, mineral oil and white vinegar. Also, be sure to wear gloves to protect your hands.

How to Spring Clean Each Room

Now that you have a clean slate and cleaning supplies, it’s time to get to work! Step-by-step, here is the ultimate checklist for spring cleaning each room.

Bathrooms

housework

Toss Linens and Rugs In to Wash—Before you clean the bathroom, go ahead and remove any bath towels, hand towels or rugs that may get in your way, tossing them in the wash.

Vacuum and Wipe Down Walls—Vacuum the room from top to bottom using a brush attachment and then wipe down walls with an all-purpose cleaner. You may find the wall opposite the mirror sticky from hairspray and other beauty products, so pay extra attention to that.

Spray Down Areas—Spray down the shower, bathtub, toilets and vanity sinks with a multi-purpose cleaner and allow it to soak to dissolve soap scum or mildew. This way, the spray can work its magic as you tick off the rest of your cleaning list. After 15-20 minutes, rinse and wipe down surfaces.

Clean the Floors—Whatever bathroom flooring type is installed, give it a damp mopping, allowing it to dry as you move on to the next room. Always be sure to follow your flooring manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. For instance, if you want to maintain vinyl and laminate floors, you should use a pH neutral resilient floor cleaner.

Bedrooms

After the bathrooms, work your way through the bedrooms. You may find this happens naturally if you have a master suite with an attached bathroom. Like the bathroom, you should dust, vacuum and wipe down all surfaces. However, here are a few bedroom-specific spring cleaning tips.

Open Windows—Bedroom linens and mattresses are known for gathering allergens and germs. In the room where you sleep, you want to eliminate these germs as much as possible. The only exception to this is if there is rainy weather, as humidity is an invitation for dust mites. If you can, take down and wash curtains, or at least run the vacuum’s upholstery attachment over them.

Peel Off the Sheets—While the windows are open, let the mattress breathe. Take the linens–duvet covers, dust ruffles, sheets, shams and pillowcases–and throw them in the wash (simultaneously removing the bathroom rugs). Tip: Wash linens in the same order you make a bed.

Clean the Floors—Like the bathroom, you want to clean the floors. Steam-clean wall-to-wall carpets and area rugs. And if you have hardwood floors throughout your home, including the bedrooms, use a gentle hardwood floor cleaner and a microfiber mop.

Kitchens

Kitchens are a lot like bathrooms when it comes to cleaning. You need to wipe down walls and countertops, as well as sinks and cabinets. For kitchens, you’ll also need to spray down appliances, allowing them to soak.

Clean the Refrigerator—Empty the fridge and freezer, keeping perishables in a cooler. Remove the glass shelves, spraying and wiping down each as well as the ceramic interior. Be sure to go over door seals with hot water and a small bit of dishwashing liquid and, before placing everything back, ensure they’re dry so the suction will hold secure.

Degrease Appliances—Put the oven on its self-cleaning function if it’s not too dirty, But for a deeper clean, apply a baking soda and water paste, allowing it to sit for at least 20 minutes to break down the grease and burnt food. For the microwave, place a bowl of lemon juice water blend inside and cook until boiling–approximately two to three minutes–to loosen food particles, wiping it clean with a damp cloth.

Clean the Floors—Kitchen floors see tons of traffic and spills, so it’s imperative to keep them clean and maintained. As mentioned previously, In order to clean your kitchen floors correctly, make sure you follow our guide to floor care for your flooring type.

Living Areas and Dining Room

Like bedrooms, vacuum, dust and wipe down all surfaces, including shelves and electronics. Be sure to vacuum or wash curtains and window treatments, too. For open floor plan homes, you’ll likely follow the same floor cleaning tips as other rooms. However, here are some extra tips for spring cleaning these common areas:

Dust Fans and Tall Shelves—Use an extendable duster on hidden, hard to reach areas such as ceiling fans, bookshelves and china cabinets.

Clean Upholstery—Like mattresses, upholstered seating is a haven for dust mites, so it’s critical to give them a deep clean. Buy or rent an upholstery-cleaning machine and allow it to air dry completely.

Take It Easy!

Your spring cleaning is over, so time to take it easy! Enjoy your spring-cleaned home and don’t you dare touch that sparkling kitchen. Instead, order delivery and unwind for the night. You deserve it.
