AHF Contract Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) Is Back!

Why VCT?

VCT (vinyl composition tile) has been a well-known fixture in the flooring industry for decades. For nearly 100 years, limestone and vinyl have been manufactured into sheets and cut into tiles. VCT effortlessly withstands high-traffic applications, especially commercial projects with specific technical needs like heavy rolling and static loads. Environments like grocery stores, classrooms and hospital hallways are well suited for VCT.

Design options are limitless, with a wide array of colors available and countless possibilities of layouts and patterns. In addition, the affordability has endured extreme economic trends for almost a century, making installed VCT costs per square foot a fraction of the expense compared to those of porcelain tile. Durability also remains unmatched when competing with LVP and resilient sheet goods, as well-maintained VCT can last a lifetime.

Modern VCT has evolved considerably in terms of ecological sustainability while also retaining the qualities that made it so successful – being budget-friendly and made to last. Today, VCT is largely composed of North American sourced limestone and is FloorScore certified due to low VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions. The Environmental Protections Agency records the components, manufacturing processes, and resulting environmental impacts of all flooring sold in the US; this evaluation records its results in an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration), a public, certified, and registered report. Transparency is a valuable asset in today's flooring market and VCT now meets or exceeds government standards in place to minimize the carbon footprint of manufacturing.

VCT has proven itself inimitable and meets a substantial need within the construction and flooring industries. Contractors know VCT as a long-lasting and reliable flooring option, especially when it easily meets strict financial parameters that tile and LVP cannot.

History of VCT

In 1933, the first iteration of VCT flooring was introduced to the market and was comprised of polyvinyl chloride and fibrous silicate minerals. It was touted as a cost-effective and durable flooring solution, but those features were not enough to gain notable traction before the onset of World War II. Vinyl was generally scarce through the 1940s and manufacturing efforts within vinyl factories were concentrated on supporting the needs of the military. With the 1950s and 60s came a burst of popularity as VCT was used frequently in an explosion of both commercial and residential construction. The strength of VCT, along with the low cost, made it the obvious choice for large-scale projects, particularly educational and healthcare institutions.
